Dhaya was a champion of workers and of teachers in particular. He began his career as a teacher and was a community and political activist. He resigned from teaching to take up a position in the United Democratic Front (UDF) affiliate, the Durban Housing Action Committee (DHAC), where he contributed to the struggle against apartheid.
He was also an active member of SADTU and served as a shop steward. Dhaya served his country in government as a Deputy Director-General in the Department of Public Works. He was a non-executive member of the South African Democratic Teachers Union Curtis Nkondo Professional Development Institute (SCNPDI), and spent the latter part of his life consulting and enjoying life with his family.
We extend condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
