The establishment of the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) in 1994 at its founding meeting in Pretoria was a significant milestone for labour relations and education in South Africa. The ELRC has over the years succeeded in signing collective agreements that directly benefit educators in classrooms. The Council serves educators in the public education sector, specifically those employed in terms of the Employment of Educators Act 76 of 1998.

The Education Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA) is mandated to promote and facilitate the delivery of education, training and development in order to enhance the skills profile of the Education, Training and Development (ETD) sector and contribute to the creation of employment opportunities especially for those previously disadvantaged.
